Meet ThatViolaKid

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony for the Chamber Music Olympics featured violist and social media sensation, Drew Alexander Forde (@ThatViolaKid).

This mini-performance hosted music by Ravel, Schumann, Piazzolla, and Tchaikovsky as well as exclusive concert works by Vieuxtemp, Paganini, and Bach.

Special thanks to the Masaki School of Music, J&B Pizza, Copy Express, and Aloha Discovered for making this concert possible!

Beginning the concert, Drew played Capriccio by Vieuxtemp, a somber and mature adagio.

Following Drew was violinist Dustin Wilkes-Kim who played an impressive Paganini piece for solo violin, the Caprice No.5.

Violinist Evan Hjort played the famous Bach Chaconne after Dustin’s virtuosic performance. This challenging and arduous trek of themes and variations told a moving story.

Joined by cellist Daniel Lim, Evan and Daniel played a movement from Ravel’s duo sonata, a beautiful and colorful impressionistic style.

Taking the stage next was a couple of movements from Schumann’s first string quartet played by violinists Dustin, Charissa Leung, violist Drew, and cellist Daniel Lucas.

Schumann dedicated this work to his beloved Clara on her birthday, embodying many romantic and dramatic features of storytelling.

This special Piazzolla arrangement for string quintet heated things quickly. Joined by violinists Mann-wen, Dustin Wilkes-Kim, Evan Hjort, Charissa Leung, and bassist Chris Yick, the Piazzolla quintet arrangement was exciting entertainment.

In conclusion to this diverse concert, six musicians came together for a fantastic finale.

Performed by violinists Evan Hjort, Mann-wen Lo, violists Drew Forde, Michael Chong, cellist Daniel Lim, and bassist Chris Yick, the first movement of Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence was a fantastic closer.

After the concert, there was a reception for pizza and dessert. Guests got to meet with Drew and all of the Olympics musicians.
